7 Secrets to Make Your Reader Buy From You

Have you ever wondered how companies get you to buy what they’re selling?

Maybe you haven’t given it much thought until now. Maybe you’ve always thought, “I buy what I want, when I want, and how I want”…

But are you sure about this?

What if I told you that after reading this post you’ll know, exactly what these businesses do and, how you can use the same secrets to grow your business, would you like that?

There is an exact science used when advertising anything….there’s no guessing. These techniques/secrets have been tried and tested and they work.

This is the REAL reason why you choose to buy anything. These secrets have long been known by master salespeople, psychologists, sociologists, and “con artists”.

And I’m going to reveal how to use these industry secrets to, get the most out of your copy…and the MAXIMUM for your business.

Lets’ start with…

Secret One: Pattern Interrupts

The easiest way to explain a pattern interrupt is to talk about what the goal of a pattern interrupt is and, that is to break the pattern that a situation would normally produce.

So, what exactly does this mean?

Let’s use telemarketers for our example (please don’t take offense if you’re a telemarketer…this is just my experience)

What happens when a telemarketer calls you?

If you’re like most people, as soon as the telemarketer identifies himself as “John Doe, calling from XYZ Insurance Company, to talk about saving money on your premiums.”

What’s your first reaction?

You probably regret taking the call…and then try to figure out the quickest way to end the call, right?

That’s the pattern of a phone call from a telemarketer that, has been created in your mind, based on your experience.

But what if the telemarketer called you and said something like…
”Hey Jane, it’s John Doe, does that name ring a bell?”

Rather than immediately launching into “defense mode” against this poor telemarketer, you’d stop to think for a minute—and then probably respond differently, right?

And that’s the power of a pattern interrupt.

So how can you use pattern interrupts in your copy or any content you’re writing?

You might have seen the words “WARNING!” or “ATTENTION!” used on websites, emails, or social media, these are two examples that you can use.

Usually, you’ll find these words in headlines. However, it doesn’t always work (because it’s been overused so many times over the years) but they’re still good examples.

The best way to use a pattern interrupt is to insert a new completely unrelated idea into your copy, rather than using words.

However, be careful when doing this. You don’t want to write something like…

”This winter has a record high snowfall, probably due to climate change. Now, book us today for all your copywriting needs.”

Does this make sense?

So, always make sure you can relate your idea in some way to what you’re selling.

Secret Two: Get Your Reader to Say Yes…Yes…Yes!

Your goal with this technique is to get your reader to say “yes” often as they read or listen to your copy.

You do this by asking closed-ended questions.

Here are some examples of closed-ended questions that could be used to get a “yes” response from your reader.

- Well isn’t that neat, wouldn’t you agree?
- Am I right?
- Isn’t that exciting?
- Isn’t that cool?
- I’m sure you’ve noticed this too?
- Is this making sense?
- Are you getting all this?
- Can you imagine if this happened to you?

The reason why this is so effective is because, you’re getting your reader into a pattern of saying “yes” before you get into the details of your offer.

Then, when you finally present your offer, your reader is more likely to keep saying “yes” and, then purchase whatever you’re selling.

Secret Three: Awareness Pattern

Words that subtly implant suggestions into your reader’s mind are called awareness pattern words.

Words like: notice, see, realize, aware, experience, understand, and discover.

They then go on autopilot and just assume that everything following the awareness word is true. So, for instance…

The idea is that when you read awareness words, it triggers that part of the brain focused on critical thinking.

I’m sure you’ve noticed how powerful using awareness pattern words in your copywriting can be, right?

Or, I’ll bet you’ve realized that with these secrets, you can really improve your content writing skills.

Secret Four: Subtle Commands

This technique is used when you try to implant a thought into someone’s subconscious. Normally, this is done verbally. For instance…

You might attend a seminar (or these days webinars) and the speaker will emphasize words or phrases they want you to remember.

This is an embedded command. It can also be done when writing your copy too, like this…

“Wow what a hot summer we’re having!”

If your days are filled with sun, sea, and surf…then let us keep you covered with our newly formulated SPF 60 sunblock, Cool Rays. For when you absolutely need superior protection.

To add embedded commands to your copy, you could use bold text, or italicize the words, or you could put a space before and after the command to subtly draw attention to it.

The most important thing to note is that your embedded command should flow and fit in with the text, otherwise you’ll lose your reader…

And once you’ve lost them…then you’re unable to move them to take any action.

Secret Five: Use 3 Facts

This secret is a great way to transition into your actual offer.

Here you’re going to use two true statements and then follow it up with a third true statement that you’d like your reader to accept.

Let’s look at an example to see how it works…

All businesses need to make huge sales to grow and thrive in, today’s challenging economy. (True statement)

If you’re not selling to the right audience then, you’ll never make those huge sales. (True statement)

And that’s exactly what we do. As a top-notch copywriting company, E L CONCEPTS can help you craft the right message to, target the right audience and, get those sales that will expand your NEW business to the next level. (True statement to be accepted)

As you can see this is another way of getting your reader to buy into what you’re saying.

You can almost imagine your readers nodding in agreement after each statement.

Secret Six: Sell the Next Step

Even though this term was coined by Harlan Kilstein, this was one of the first copywriting techniques I learned from the legendary Roger Horberry.

In his book, “Brilliant Copywriting,” he writes this…

“The purpose of a headline is, to get your prospect to read the first sentence of your copy. The purpose of the first sentence is to get your prospect to read the second sentence. The purpose of the second sentence is to get your prospect to read the third sentence.”

And so on, and so forth

In other words, you’re constantly selling the next step.

Secret 7: Use Universal Quantifiers

This is probably the most used secret.
Even you might do it from time to time but, you probably didn’t realize there was a term for it.

Examples of universal quantifiers are words like: All, Everyone, Always, Every Time, and Nobody.

In relationships, some of these words probably SHOULDN’T be used.
For instance, try saying this to your partner

“You NEVER tidy up,” or “You ALWAYS do the wrong thing”  the conversation usually doesn’t end well, right?

These are great words to move your reader to action.

And that’s it…

How did you find this post?
Was it interesting?
More importantly, was it useful?

Now, go forth and create incredibly brilliant copy that, takes your business to the next level

Bye for now.
