How To K.Y.S.S Anyone In 2021…And Why You Should
Have you bought a pc or laptop recently?
If you did, then the salesperson would’ve pitched you something like this…
Salesperson: Good day Sir, how can I help you today?
Me: Hi, I would like to buy a laptop
Salesperson: Great, so here we have our latest MSI Modern laptop
Me: Ok cool
Salesperson: It has a 14” Full HD ultra-thin bezel display, 10th gen Intel Core i7 - 10510U up to 4.9Ghz 8 GB DDR 4 Ram (512GB NvMe SSD), Nvidia GeForce Mx 330 2GB, exclusive cooler boost technology, 2 USB 3.2 (type C) HDMI (2 USB 3.2 (Type A)
Me: Ok cool…cool, cool, cool, cool
(Left the store…never to return again)
You might ask, what’s the problem with this sales pitch? He has just described a killer laptop.
Sure, now let’s look at another store I visited
Salesperson: Good day Sir, Can I assist you with anything?
Me: Err yes, I’m looking for a laptop (starting to get nervous)
Salesperson: What would you be using it for Sir?
Me: I need something that can do everything, play games, work, and maybe some light video editing
Salesperson: No problem Sir, here we have a laptop that can do everything you want. It has the same power as newer models but for half the price, plus a phenomenal graphics card for all your gaming needs
Me: I’ll take it!
A Good K.Y.S.S
Yes, he was selling me benefits and all the good WIIFM stuff, but more importantly…He used K.Y.S.S!
Let me explain…
K.Y.S.S stands for Keep Your Selling Simple
Tech will always be intimidating, confusing, and overwhelming…actually buying anything new could be scary.
Now let me ask you, have you ever bought something that you don’t understand?
My guess…maybe a few times, but mostly not.
And that’s where the second salesperson got the selling point spot on, he used K.Y.S.S. to perfection!
This point is vital when you’re writing for advertising.
Firstly, it’s easier to clarify points of confusion with the customer in person…however in your copy, it’s a bit more tricky.
And secondly, most people don’t read at a college professor level…not even close.
So keep your selling simple.
This is how to K.Y.S.S
But how should you K.Y.S.S everyone in 2021?
There are many techniques, but here are a few general copywriting tips that’ll help your copy:
- Write like you speak (Caution: keep your target audience in mind)
- Use short simple sentences
- Use simple words - 1 to 2 syllables
- Use simple paragraphs - 1 to 4 lines
- Use numbers
- Use synonyms for complicated words
Bonus Tip: Tell a story (more on this next week)
Talk To The Heart
People buy what they understand,
and when they understand…they’re more emotionally connected to your product or service.
Remember, people buy with emotions and justify their purchase with logic (advertising 101).
So, talk to their hearts with plain, simple-to-understand language and you’ll have a partner for life.
And that is why you should K.Y.S.S everyone in 2021…it’s good for your business.
Bye for now
P.S. All the smooth-talking words in the world will get you nowhere without good customer service (sorry this is my mini-rant)
