From Boring to Brilliant: Transform Tired Marketing Messages into Stunning Stories
Hi!
Who hates being smashed in the face with facts, figures, and sleazy sales messages?
Yet, turn on your tv, log online, or tune into your favorite station, and you’ll be bombarded by “deals of the century”.
It’s strange how ads have evolved (more like disintegrated) into what we now call “modern advertising.”
My five cents motto has always been…
If facts tell…stories sell.
Of course, rambling off on quirky paths, dull repetition, no clear plots, and forcing irrelevant BS…
Is a surefire way to send most folks running for the hills.
No.
I’m talking about heart-warming fables, epic adventures, and terrible tales of tragedy, drenched in human emotion, that have the ability to morph my sense of time, space, and reality…
Transport me into the world of the seller, where after reading what they’re offering, I gotta have!
Welcome to the world of sensational storytelling.
But before I reveal exactly to craft your own persuasive narrative, allow me to ramble off on a relevant path, starting with our ancient ancestors.
Stories have been told and retold by every creed, culture, and country across the globe for centuries.
In fact, storytelling is one of the oldest forms of communication, used to convey important information, share harrowing experiences, teach vital lessons, and create social bonds.
In prehistoric times, stories were passed down orally from generation to generation, transmitting important cultural knowledge and traditions.
Stories were often used to explain natural phenomena, too, like the movement of the sun and stars, where waves come from, and why mountains explode with fiery liquid.
As humans developed written language, storytelling became even more important, because now info could be shared across larger distances, and even kept alive in books for future generations.
Epic poems, fables, and religious texts became important cultural touchstones, shaping the beliefs and values of entire societies.
Fast forward to modern times, and storytelling continues to be a crucial aspect of communication.
More than ever, stories are used to engage, entertain, and educate people about complex ideas while creating memorable experiences.
By now, you can probably see where I’m going with this, right?
We’re hardwired to hear, listen, and react to stories.
It’s literally encoded into our DNA.
Yet…
And here’s the strange part…
Most folks suck at telling stories.
Even worse when those same people attempt to sell you something.
You can understand why modern advertising is a hodge-podge recipe, simmering with limp, dull, dreary facts and figures while missing the most important human ingredient…
Emotion!
We’ve become resistant to present-day ads, salespeople, call centers (aka phone stalkers), and shitty clickbait tactics.
And so has your audience!
Nobody rolls out of bed in the morning thinking…
“Mmmm, goody goody gumdrops! I can’t wait to read the latest adverts AALLLL DAY LONGGGG!”
No.
The ONLY way to shake, rattle and throw your audience out of their impervious-to-advertising bubble is…
With heart-stopping, pulse-popping, palms sweating, jaw-dropping copy, neatly packed into a pithy, powerful package called…
A damn good story!
A good tale, when done right, allows your audience to FEEL something.
And that feeling is critical in the buying process.
You’re driving the story, and it’s your responsibility to keep it on the road.
Your reader will abandon you at the first hint you don’t know where we’re going… and they’ll hate you for getting their hopes up for a good tale, only to receive a poor punch line.
When done right, stories have the power to captivate, inspire, and persuade.
Now, here are a few ways you can transform tired marketing messages into sensational stories, which I call:
7 Titillating Tips to Tantalize, Enthrall, and Enchant Your Audience
Who’s Gonna Read Your Stuff?
Trying to craft a compelling story, without knowing who it’s for, is like firing a gun at a moving target…in the dark…while you’re floating in outta space (ridiculous example yes, but makes the point).
Take the time to research your audience and find out what motivates them, what nightmares plague them, and what they're looking for to soothe their pain, before putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
2. Plan Your Plot
Once you've identified the problem, create a story showing how your product or service can help.
The narrative MUST be engaging, relatable, and gripping from beginning to end. Use characters, dialogue, and descriptive language to bring your story to life.
3. Cue the Violin
What do you want your audience to feel? Happy, excited, curious, fearful, sad, what?
4. Go Down the Rabbit Hole
Transport them into your world. Bring your tale to life, with striking memorable imagery. Use pictures, videos, and other visual elements to enhance your narrative and create a more immersive experience for your audience.
5. No One Is “You-er Than You”
Don't try to be something you're not, and don't try to create a story that doesn't ring true. Be honest and genuine, and create a narrative that reflects your brand's values and mission.
6. Where Ever You Go, There I’ll Be
Consistency is important when telling stories in marketing. Your brand story should be consistent across all channels and touchpoints, from your website and social media to your advertising and customer service.
This consistency helps to build trust with your audience and reinforces your brand's values and mission.
7. Give Them a Happy Ending
Don’t leave your audience high and dry, give them what they came for…
Tell them to take action on the offer you’ve promised them in your pitch.
Whether it's signing up for a newsletter, making a purchase, or sharing your story with others, a carefully crafted call to action can turn looky-loo prospects, into premium paying customers.
So, to conclude…
You can inspire action, build relationships, and create a lasting impact by following these 7 powerful steps, transforming tired marketing messages into sensational sales for your biz.
Ditch the dry, dreary stuff and start resonating with your audience's emotions and experiences.
Your story has the power to build a strong brand identity, cultivate die-hard followers and leave a legacy…
Just like our ancestors.
But what do you think?
I could be preaching to the converted (because you already know this stuff) or this has blown your mind, and you’re frothing at changing your entire marketing message.
Love to read your comments below,
Bye for now.
P.S. Don’t know if you’ve read my previous post (if not, pop over there now before proceeding)
But the gist of that post is…
DON’T WRITE YOUR OWN COPY.
I’m pretty sure that if you needed brain surgery, you wouldn’t run to your kitchen, grab the sharpest knife, and start hacking away at your skull (you could, but it’s a bad idea).
Writing your own sales message is the same thing (kinda)
Sure, you could do it yourself (and the consequences might not be as dire) but it’s never recommended. Why?
It’s a mess to guess.
Plus, you’ll pay more to fix the problem, and by then you’ve wasted your precious time and resources.
